Rhubarb and Strawberry Crumble Pie - Recipe & Ramadan Mubarak

I had conversation with my sister before about the things that she wanted to eat, things that not common in Malaysia and pretty hard to get our hands on - fennel (the bulb), radish (the European radishes - Raphanus sativus), rhubarb, and many more. I was not that interested before, not until I have seen them fresh and aplenty at the Wageningen market. I'm curios how these common temperate climate vegetables/fruits taste like. Asking my hubby who is not into culinary doesn't help either even though he grew up eating them. So each week I'm planning to buy these 'uncommon' (uncommon for me who grew up in a tropical country that is) vegetables/fruits and experimenting them at our kitchen.

There were many rhubarbs at the market today, which were sold pretty cheap. Looking at them reminds me of celery, but they are from different family. My hubby warned me the sour taste of rhubarb, and I told him I'm going to make pie out of it mix with strawberries. He was keen with the idea, as long he is not helping me out with making the pie (geez thanks).

I had not prepared my favorite pie dough beforehand (which you guys can get the recipe from Majalah Rasa July issue which I had written), so making crumble pie is the next best thing (or even better).

Filling
A bunch of rhubarb - cut into 3 cm long
250 gm strawberries - cut into quarter
1 tablespoon lemon juice
4 tablespoons of castor sugar
A dash of cinnamon powder and nutmeg
1 tablespoon of corn flour

Topping
1 cup flour
2 tablespoons castor sugar
1 teaspoon cinnamon powder
6 tablespoon cold unsalted butter - cut into small pieces
A dash of salt

Method:
1. Place the rhubarb, lemon juice and sugar  in a deep dish (I used square 8' x 8') and cover the dish with foil and bake at 180 °C until the rhubarb is tender.
2. While waiting prepare the topping - mix everything in a large bowl (or you can use food processor) and mix until the dough becomes sandy (or crumbly). Place the dough in the fridge while waiting for the rhubarb to cook.
3. After the rhubarb becomes tender, mix with strawberries and corn flour and cover the filling with the topping and bake for 30 - 40 minutes or until the crust becomes golden brown. Serve with powdered sugar and whipped cream.

As for the experience goes, the pie was good, but I had to put lots of powdered sugar to complement with the sour taste haha. I should have put more sugar in the pie, but then again I like the fact that I can control the sweetness by using the powdered sugar. As for my hubby, he said he likes it and can't imagine he would have eaten rhubarb again after all this year.

Owh, have a great and wonderful Ramadan. Ramadan will be a challenge for those living at the Northern hemisphere so hope we can go through it :)

New pie available at Muniroh's Bakery: Engadiner Nusstorte (Swiss Caramel Walnut Pie)

We received Ladlust magazine every other month from my hubby's godfather for our wedding present. Despite being in Deutsch and I know ein bisschen (a little) of it, the pretty pictures in the magazine never failed to make me flip the pages until the end. Sometimes I asked my hubby to translate the nice recipe in the magazine, even though most of the time the ingredients are not available in Malaysia.

For the winter edition, the magazine featured walnut as the main ingredient for its cooking section. What caught my eyes was the delicious torte (pie) picture - Engadiner Nusstorte (walnut pie). The pie looks so good that I know I must make one someday.

Engadiner Nusstorte is a traditional Swiss pie, but the pie is also famous in other parts of Germany. It is made with rich butter pastry with caramelised walnut. My hubby said that the pie is sweet, so I reduced the amount of sugar to suit our liking.

After the pie was done, I was hoping not to eat it until the next day but my curiosity beats my determination. From a small slice it became large slices as my hubby asking for more helping. We ate half of the pie in just one day, that shows how good the pie was. The best part was when my hubby said that it tastes similar to the traditional one. Knowing where he comes from, it was definitely a compliment ;)

This pie is definitely a must try for nuts lover :) It is as good as pecan pie, but different :D

Pecan pie ordered by Kak Ferrol

Don't you just love nuts? I am a big fan of them and could eat a bucket full while ignoring the little voice in my head saying 'pimples~ pimples~'- which explain why my face looks like a pepperoni pizza at the moment

Pecan, of all nuts, is my favorite. It has caramelly taste and tastes really good with ice creams, cakes, etc. I really love pies, and  have been dying to try pecan pie when I was an undergraduate but never had the chance to do so. My friend tasted it once and said it was too sweet for her liking so when I decided to make one for myself I reduced the amount of sugar by half.

I find the pie really good and love it so much. I totally recommend it to those who love nuts like me.

Kak Ferrol, a friend of my friend, ordered a pecan pie from me few weeks ago (yeah, I rarely update my blog now), and she said she likes it and even eat it with ice cream because it is not that sweet hohoho. Thanks kak Ferrol for the order :)

Anyway, I am not sure if any of you aware of this but pecan is damn expensive in Malaysia! 500 gm for RM 20++!!!!!!! Oh man...I think the only cheap stuff here are sugar and palm oil, and I don't even use palm oil for cooking (sorry Dr Siti - yeah I know my research is on oil palm but I am not really a big fan of it hoho)

Chocolate truffle pie ordered by Arfah and Haidar

Arfah, my friend during primary school, ordered chocolate truffle pie after she saw the chocolate truffle pie that I posted on Muniroh's Bakery Facebook page. She came to my lab to pick it up from Ampang. Too bad it was on weekends thus a lot of roads closed on campus and I had to look at the map and guide her the way while talking on the phone. My lab is near to Lebuh Silikon (yes Lebuh Silikon is in UPM) but that road closes during weekends and public holidays. Since I am always at my lab during weekends, it is pretty tricky to get there, but do call me so that I can guide you :)

Chocolate truffle pie
9.5' RM 45

Owh, and another thing, I used Oreo instead of digestive biscuit as the pie shell since all stores that I went too run out of stock huhu. And yeah, Haidar, a friend of my friend also ordered the same thing but I didn't bother to take another picture of the pie since it looked similar to this one haha.

Thanks for the order Arfah and Haidar, glad that both of you love the pie :)

Delicious pies available at Muniroh's Bakery

I have always looking forward for Pi day (as in pi = 3.142) in UCD. On that day, the Silo and other cafes always offer delicious pies with cheap price. My favorite? well there are many, but pumpkin pie is my number one favorite :D

Anyway, I also bake pie aside cakes. I know people love to order cakes/cupcakes, but maybe you guys should try out some of my delicious pies as well. Here are some of the pies that Muniroh's Bakery provides.

Pecan pie- pecan has strong caramelly taste, and this pie brings out the flavor of pecan. Nutty, caramelly and not that sweet. Lots of my friends love this pie because it is not that sweet and they can taste the pecan really well.

Chocolate truffle pie- really chocolatey pie with delicious digestive biscuits or oreo as based. Recommended for chocolate lovers.

There are more pies offered by Muniroh's Bakery like pumpkin pie, durian custard pie etc, and you should give them a try sometimes :)

Pumpkin pie and cupcakes ordered by Sabrina

Sabrina requested pumpkin pie from me, and she asked whether I put cinnamon in it. I told her that I put it, and I could omit the spice if she doesn't want it since lots of Malaysians that I know don't like the taste. However, to my surprise she said she loves pumpkin pie with cinnamon.

Then she messaged me again if it is possible to get 6 pieces of red velvet and 6 pieces of ying and yang cupcakes. Take note usually I don't take small number of cupcakes but since she already ordered the pie, so  I am okay with that.

I asked Sabrina for the feedback and she said she loved the goodies and would order more cupcakes in the future. She suggested I cook the pie for 5 minutes longer as what she did to make it perfect. Thanks Sabrina for the suggestion :)

Thank you Sabrina for the order, and I'm really glad that you love them :)

6 red velvet cupcakes with vanilla frosting: RM 15
6 Ying and Yang cupcakes: RM 24
9.5 inch pumpkin pie: RM 25
Total: RM 64

Fresh homemade pumpkin pie

The last time I ate homemade pumpkin pie was on Thanksgiving 2007 and that was 5 years ago *gasp* Growing up reading Archie and Friends, I always wanted to try food that is common in the U.S which is difficult to find in Malaysia in those days. When I went to the US for my undergraduate studies, I didn't miss the opportunities to try all the food that I've been craving to try when I was young. Pumpkin pie was one of it.

The first time I had a bite of it during freshman year, I totally fall in love with it. The texture of the pumpkin, the spices, the sweetness, all of that really complement the pie.

But one thing for sure, this is pretty uncommon in Malaysia so lots of Malaysians don't dare or like the taste. But if you are one of the people who likes to try new food, I would recommend this pie for you :)
